Das Ka Dhamki – Film Review

Vishwak Sen’s Das Ka Dhamki is a story about greed, power and money in a society fuelled by the wealthy. It follows the lives of a waiter and an orphan, Krishna Das (Vishwak Sen), and his friends, Mahesh and Hyper Aadhi, who work in a star hotel.

At the hotel, they are constantly disrespected by their customers and their manager, Deepthi (Akshara Gowda), is unsympathetic towards them. Das, fed up by the disrespect, decides to spend a day at the same hotel like a customer, with his friends.

What starts out as a simple day of lollygagging, quickly turns into a full-fledged lie when Das meets a fashion student, Keerthi (Nivetha Pethuraj), who mistakes him for the CEO of a pharmaceutical company. This sets off a series of events that turns his life upside down. Although Das may ultimately get what he desires, he soon realizes that it may not bring him the respect and dignity he has been looking for.

Das Ka Dhamki, is off to a rollicking start, with viewers being treated to a laugh-filled first half. There are foreign duets, humorous scenes with Mahesh and Aadhi, and some emotional moments thanks to Das’ plight, as well as Rao Ramesh’s entry. While some problematic tropes are present, an attempt is made to correct them. Despite this, the film runs on a predictable note, with the interval bang coming from a mile away.

The second half of the film takes a dramatic turn. On paper, the story has potential, but on-screen, it just unravels at a pace that tests the audience’s patience. Vishwak Sen attempts to flip the usual clichés, but the film meanders until it reaches the conclusion. The writers try to give the audience “twists”, but end up taking it a bit too far.

The biggest drawback of the film is its core point—a thread that revolves around pharmaceutical drugs. While it might be essential to the story, the audience doesn’t seem to care where it’s all heading. People driven by greed do what they do best after a while in the film and one just sits back and wonders when it’ll all end. This is further aggravated by an unnecessary special number (O Dollar Pillagaa).

The film is watchable solely because of Vishwak Sen’s performance. He is adept at playing both someone naïve, and someone toeing the line of morality. Nivetha Pethuraj is dependable as ever, and looks gorgeous in the process. The rest of the cast play their parts well, although Rohini is wasted in a role that could have been much more. Leon James’ score and Dinesh K Babu’s cinematography are both noteworthy.

Overall, Das Ka Dhamki is a film that is potential wasted. It works in parts, but spends the ending setting up a conflict for a sequel. With some fine-tuning, the film could have been slicker. Anwar Ali’s choppy editing fails to make a lasting impression, leaving viewers with an unsatisfactory cinematic experience. Thus, Das Ka Dhamki remains a watchable film, but only just.

The movie has been gaining positive reviews from the audience and the critics alike. It promises to be an entertaining and engaging watch. So, go check it out!
